Sweet fern is not a fern at all---it is a woody shrub with fern-like leaves. It occurs on dry, sandy soil in the coniferous region, especially in pine barrens or on dunes or beaches. Male plants produce a catkin (which releases pollen). Female plants later produce an odd, bur-like seed head. Fragrant foliage. Good for hot, dry slopes.
